Basics
Basics are our most important tool to become a successful goalie. They are the foundation of the great building that stands for our huge set of skills we have as a goalie. Positioning and movement are the key to elements for our “foundation”.
Positioning

Bill Ladd – Youth Boys Coach of Walpole Express Massachusetts – defines the positioning as the following: “Position means putting your body in the best possible place to stop the puck”. The positioning consists out of three key factors:

Square
- - Square your body up to the ball
- - This means that shoulders and hips should be facing to the ball

On angle
- - The right angle is depended of the right square – you must be squared to the floorball ball
- - To identify the right angle, imagine a line between the center of the goal and the floorball ball – you are on track when your belly button crosses the line

Depth
- - Depth describes the distance between the goalie line and you
- - By increasing the depth, you decrease the distance between you and the ball which increases your body surface and minimizes the available options to score for the shooter
- To get the right depth is situation depended
Movement

Successful goalies are in “in position” once the shot comes. To be there, Rick DiPietro, formal NHL ice hockey goalie, trained pattern movements before and after the training again and again to be timely “in positon”. Regarding the importance of movement, Rick DiPietro told the InGoal magazine: “I’ve learned along the way, especially at this level, that skating, because I’m not a big guy, is just so important for me. To be at your spots early and set, that’s the biggest thing. You see lot of goals scored because goalies are moving and not set in their position. I like to try and beat most of the plays and the passes on my feet and give myself an opportunity to be set and ready to make the save, so skating is obviously important to me”.
The right movement consists out of three key factors:

Fast
- - Reflexes
- - Reaction
- - Reposition skills

Balanced
- - Body weight equal distributed on the knees
- - Comfortable position
- - Soul and mind balanced to be focused on the game

Free hand(s)
- - Catching balls
- - Supporting of movements

Smooth
- - Like a swimming duck
- - Above water (torso) - easy peaceful swimming
- - Under water (legs) - lot of movement with the legs
